Alan Hawkins workshop students

Improv for Acting
Rooted deeply in a theatrical background, this workshop draws on Alan Hawkins’ extensive acting experience dating back to 1984. It is designed not as a comedy class, but as a true acting workshop that uses improvisation as a tool for building stage presence, emotional truth, and authentic character work. Participants will engage in practical exercises that help them trust their instincts, listen deeply, and create compelling scenes grounded in genuine theatrical craft.

Improvising in the style of Shakespeare
Step into the world of the Bard with a workshop that transforms improvisers into Elizabethan players. Participants will learn to improvise scenes and short plays in the style of Shakespeare, using heightened language, rich characters, and poetic forms. This workshop helps actors embrace the beauty of classical improv and bring Shakespearean flair to any stage.

Long-Form Improvisation: Crafting Seamless Narratives on the Fly
In this workshop, we explore long-form improv as the art of creating a play in the moment—one that flows naturally and feels cohesive to the audience. Rather than relying on abrupt or jarring edits, participants will learn the beauty of soft edits—where one scene transitions seamlessly into another as characters naturally enter and exit. This approach allows the group to build a narrative that feels like a fully realized play, with all the nuance and coherence of a scripted performance. My goal is to make long-form feel accessible and theatrical, helping improvisers create stories that resonate as a cohesive whole. It’s less about quick laughs and more about crafting a shared theatrical experience that feels genuine and richly layered.

Improv and Movement
Discover the power of physical storytelling in improvisation. This workshop focuses on how movement, object work, and spatial awareness can transform scenes. Participants will explore how body language, mime, and dynamic physical choices add depth and creativity to their improv, making scenes more engaging and memorable.

For High Schools

High School Workshops & Performances
My high school program is designed for grades 8 through 12 and welcomes all experience levels, from beginners to seasoned drama students. This workshop series focuses on learning through experience rather than traditional lessons, providing an easy-to-understand, hands-on approach to improv. Students will explore the fundamentals of improvisation, delve into the world of improvised Shakespeare, or discover the impact of movement-based improv. Each session builds confidence, fosters creativity, and can culminate in an optional final showcase featuring both students and the instructor.
