Alan Hawkins Announces His New Book – Shakespeare Improvised

A first-of-its-kind book about improvising in the style of William Shakespeare

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON — Actor, improviser, teacher, and author Alan Hawkins has announced the upcoming Kickstarter campaign for his new book, Shakespeare Improvised.

The Kickstarter pre-launch page is now live.

Shakespeare Improvised is written for actors, improvisers, teachers, and anyone who loves the works of William Shakespeare.

It is the first improv book devoted entirely to one performance style. It is also the first book specifically about improvising Shakespeare.

“Improvised Shakespeare has a reputation for being difficult,” Hawkins said. “People think they need to memorize the plays or produce perfect poetry. They don’t. Start with relationships. Start with emotion. Build the language from there.”

The book brings all three of Hawkins’ Shakespeare workshops together in one volume. It includes classroom-tested exercises, practical language tools, short-form games, and complete long-form structures.

Hawkins developed this approach while teaching teenage and adult improvisers. His method begins with emotional honesty and the relationship between the people onstage. Shakespearean language grows from that foundation.

Hawkins has been an actor since 1984 and an improviser since 2004. He trained at the Second City Conservatory and iO West in Los Angeles and continued his training in Chicago. Today, he is an ensemble member and teacher with Unexpected Productions in Seattle. He is also the author of You Can’t Learn Improv From a Book.

The first draft of Shakespeare Improvised is complete and is now being edited by a professional editor.

The upcoming Kickstarter campaign will help cover professional editing, book production, advance editions, and fulfillment. Supporters will be able to receive advance digital, paperback, and signed editions of the book.
